Hello everyone!
For the second post of my Croatia series, I am keeping it short and sweet with a little photojournal recap of our super short time along the southern coastline of Croatia. If you’re new to my blog or need a refresher, this series is recapping our vacation we took here in the summer of 2021. Croatia’s incredible and diverse landscapes took my breath away and I hope to return one day soon! It has also made me even more eager to explore the rest of the Balkans soon (I’ll be crossing off Montenegro in May/June this year! ;D).
Below you can find our 2-week itinerary and the currently available links to all of my blog posts in this series to help you with your trip planning:
August 22: Flew into Zagreb and explored some of the famous sites of the city before heading off to Istria. Photos can be found here!
August 23rd-26th: Explored highlights of the Istria Region- Hilltop Towns, Rovinj, Pula, and Cape Kamenjak. Check out all the details in this post here!
August 26th-28th: Dalmatia Coast – Omis, Split, and Klis (if you’re really determined, you might be able to fit in Makarska as well). Photojournal details in this post!
August 28th-31st: Explored Brac Island and fell in love with the town we stayed at (Pučišća). We really loved Brac because it is a big island with so much to do. It’s very easy to find solitude on this island due to its size. We sailed into Supetar, picked up our scooter, and sailed out of Milna to our next destination. More detailed info will be provided in a Brac Island blog post. I will update this post with a direct link once available.
August 31st-September 2nd: Explored the island of Mljet and its National Park. We arrived on the Pomena side, and stayed in Babino Polje to be in a central location of the island. More detailed info will be provided in a Mljet Island blog post. I will update this post with a direct link once available.
September 2nd-4th: Left Mljet and explored the beautiful city of Dubrovnik. More detailed info will be provided in a Dubrovnik blog post. I will update this post with a direct link once available.
September 5th: Flew home from Dubrovnik
Due to spending time in the Istria region, we had a shorter window for the southern coast because we really wanted to make time for the islands and Dubrovnik. However, we did manage to admire the gorgeous mountainous views of Omis, walk the historic streets of Split, and climbed the majestic Fortress of Klis.
We based ourselves in Omis because we wanted to see the stunning mountain scenery juxtaposed against the bright, blue green Cetina River. We stayed in this airbnb here, and it was very comfortable for a short stay! The host was extremely hospitable and left us a really nice gift basket. You also get free parking using her card and there is a nice little view of the mountains.
The town itself is small, with a section off the main strip that consists of cute little streets and alleyways. However, it did seem to draw in a lot of partying tourists – or at least that’s how it felt when we went. I definitely recommend staying here for a night or two to enjoy the river and views. Just be sure to explore off the main roads and you’ll quickly see its charm! I also highly recommend visiting the viewpoint at Fortress Mirabella, which is right in town. It’s a short climb up, but the steps can be steep so just something to be aware of if you have any knee or mobility issues. There is also a small entrance fee, which likely has gone up in price since I visited in 2021, so definitely carry some cash and change with you!
The next day, we visited Split and Klis. I wish we had started our day much earlier for Split, but we got caught up in traffic. It was very hard to find parking once we arrived but eventually we got a spot. The town was very crowded though, so I would recommend starting as early as you can. Definitely worth strolling through the old streets, which are full of so much history.
After Split, we went to explore the Fortress of Klis. For Game of Thrones fans, this place is the filming location for Meereen. It was really fun exploring the fortress ruins and the views of the green landscape and blue Adriatic sea were so stunning! In my opinion, it’s definitely worth the pit stop!
That wraps up my quick photojournal recap of these towns! Stay tuned for my next post in this series, all about the amazing island of Brač!
Until next time,
Kelsie
